Three years ago I opted to transfer my two youngest sons, then (ages 5 and 11) to a new school just opening in the burgeoning Lawndale community. Under the Renaissance 2010 plan I was plenty skeptical, to say the least.
Although, very skeptical, I was very excited to see that an International Baccalaureate Programme was opening in an area where there was a need for QUALITY programs. Someone downtown has heard my cries! A MAGNET school that both my sons can get into without testing, without outrageous fees and starting from scratch with a curriculum that has been proven by the world community to actually work!
I was there before the signs were on the door!
My decision to transfer my sons was one of the best ones I have made in a long time!
Here’s why…
The atmosphere is conducive to learning. Real learning is happening; work is displayed so you can see that writing and critical thinking skills are being practiced. That is how you master those very important 21st century skills. Homework is assigned and quality work is expected to be returned. Positive images with encouraging words using our own student body, line the walls! The smiles of our children on the outside walls greet friends and strangers alike. The building is secure with security at each door. Safety is a huge concern in this day and time.
My boys had to un-learn some bad habits because expectations were not as high in the old place. There were some tears because we had to push through on those cold days, no tardies, no absences unless you are at death’s door! LOL! Frazier Magnet is Number 1 in Area 7 in attendance. The teachers here have an open door policy. I can shadow when needed. I know I can come in and see and hear what teachers are saying to my boys. It is a small school, so there is a family atmosphere. I love the teacher assistants because they have children who attend the school, talk about investment! The principal talks about her staff and their training, because what is expected of her students is expected of her staff. They are always open to learning new things, no one knows everything.
The administration (Ms. Teasley) was open to some new ideas with parent programming. We have a highly functioning NCLB Title 1 PAC, ALSC and PTA. She is welcoming to other parent groups and organizations who want to come in and help support the learning of both students and their families.
I can go on about how happy I am with Frazier, and let me say this; there have been some down days as with any family. But, for what I have invested (my boys) I am very pleased with this school and it is deserving of all its accolades. There is Excellence in Achievement and you can tell that this is that kind of place! My boys deserve this wonderful school, it has been a long time coming.
It is a great day for learning at Frazier International Magnet School!
